MJI Joins Goldwater to Fight for First Amendment at SCOTUS
MJI Director Shadrack White has partnered with the Goldwater Institute to file an amicus brief before the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the First Amendment. The brief was filed in a case, Contest Promotions v. San Francisco, about whether the government has the right to tell businesses they cannot put up signs advertising for other businesses. For example, Goldwater and MJI argue a tire shop should have the right to rent out its window space for a sign advertising a nearby grocery store. Too many city sign codes—including many in Mississippi—discriminate based on what signs say and are unconstitutional. MJI has worked with cities around Mississippi to help them update their sign codes so that they comply with the First Amendment. Click here to read the brief.
